I was chatting with one of my clients last night about general resume questions, and I was reinforcing the idea that writing a great resume requires a slight shift in thinking. You must think from the perspective of the employer.
This is the #1 question your resume needs to answer: “What’s in it for them?” Meaning, how can you help the potential employer with whatever problem they need help solving?
Answering this question is not the easiest thing to do, because we are wired to think from our own perspective. In her book, Résumé Magic, author Susan Whitcomb identifies 12 specific needs most companies have. Among those are the need to:
- Make money.
- Save money.
- Save time.
- Make work easier.
- Solve a specific problem.
- Be more competitive.
- Build relationship / an image.
- Expand business.
- Attract new customers.
- Retain existing customers.
Go through your resume. Is your resume telling the potential employer how you will help them solve one of these needs? Are you able to articulate it easily and concisely? For example, did you implement new policies and procedures in your current job that saved the company $1 million in office supplies last year? Can you implement these same policies and procedures at the new company and save them $1 million, too?
That’s what they really want to know. How are you going to help them?
The next time you are looking over your resume, analyze it from the perspective of the employer. Not only will this help you write a more effective resume, but it will help you during the interview process as well.
